Of all the arts, architecture is the most public. By definition, it is the artistic medium we all have to live with. It is around us and surrounds us. In general, it is the most expensive of the arts. It’s hard to imagine any sculpture or painting costing the millions that corporate headquarters or symphony halls cost. And more than any of the other arts, architecture often embodies the values and purposes of its sponsors. The skyscraper signaled the modernity of its corporate sponsor just as a Gothic cathedral pointed to both the importance of the church and the wealth and pride of the medieval city that built it.

This series of slide lectures will deal first with Lima’s architecture and then with contemporary architecture in the western world. Discussion will also be encouraged.
