Dear Friend of ArtSpace,
A couple of weeks ago, a good
friend with a finger on the pulse of our area told me that she considered
ArtSpace/Lima “one of the treasures of the community.”
I was brought up short by her
comment -- not because I didn’t agree with her (I do, of course), but
because I was intrigued by both the simplicity of the formula and,
simultaneously, by the many implications it entailed.
What, after all, is a
“treasure”? A sapphire tiara in a silk-lined silver casket? Hidden away
except for special occasions? A museum piece? A bauble for the privileged
few to own and/or view?
Or is it a living, evolving,
prized and protected thing, held in common and nurtured for growth?
And what about that
“community”? Same kinds of questions: Small and privileged? Or
encompassing and open?
I know what I want “treasure of
the community” to mean for ArtSpace/Lima. As both a “treasure” and as an
institution in “the community,” I want it to mean -- actually, it does mean
something alive and growing.
That’s why I’m writing to
invite you to be a member of ArtSpace/Lima for the calendar year 2009. I
think you may share that opinion.
Maybe you’ve attended one of
our exhibits. Or entered a watercolor in Spring Show. Or, on a smooth Ohio
summer night, come to one of the rallies. Maybe you or your children have
enrolled in one of the many classes we hold through the year. Or maybe you
were lucky enough to attend “Deck the Halls” or “Jazz at the Greenhouse,”
and you were glad you came and glad we did it.
Now in our 55th year
of operations, it is no exaggeration to say that ArtSpace is the major focus
of art and arts activities in the area -- activities that include a full
schedule of challenging and exhilarating exhibits in the Ellen Nelson
Gallery; another full schedule of equally interesting exhibits in our
second-floor gallery, ArtZone; classes for both adults and children; and
special events, including of course, the Rallies in the Square, which have
just finished their 19th year of providing, according to The
Lima News Readers’ Poll, “The Best Place for Live Music” in the region.
Clearly, we’re doing something
right. But we’d be doing it even better with you as a member.
When you choose to become a
member of ArtSpace/Lima, you do more than write a check. You join with
like-minded friends to foster the arts in Northwest Ohio. You endorse the
ArtSpace mission to bring the arts, education and special events to the
area. You make an investment in the future of arts education. And you make
a statement about the critical role that the arts play in all our lives.
Your membership is your tangible commitment to the goals we share.
In a word, our members are the
soul of the organization, and we cordially invite you to join their numbers.
As part of your membership,
you’ll receive a 10% discount on any purchase from our gallery or gift shop,
a free subscription to our Quarterly Newsletter, advance notice of
ArtSpace/Lima events and exhibitions, and special discounts on classes
(adult or children’s).
We have exciting plans
for exhibits and classes in the year to come and we hope you’ll choose to
enjoy them with us. Please visit the other pages of our website,
www.artspacelima.com,
for extensive information about our various activities.
ArtSpace memberships run a
calendar year. Below, for your convenience, there's a link to a membership
brochure which outlines the various levels of membership we offer. You may
mail this completed form to us at 65 Town Square, Lima, OH 45801; or, drop
it off at our Gallery from Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. or on Saturday,
10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Nothing could be easier than
filling it out, writing a check, and popping it in the mail. Won’t you do
it now, while it’s fresh on your mind (and in your hand)? With your help,
ArtSpace/Lima will continue to be, in my friend’s words, a treasure of the
Lima community.
Thanks.

Bill Sullivan
Operations Manager
P.S. If you’ve recently sent
in your membership (after July 1), please accept our thanks and know that
your membership is current through 2009.
